Graber is a name brand of blinds that come in a variety of types, such as cellular, venetian, mini blinds, wood or vertical blinds. These blinds come in an array of styles and colors. After continuous use, normal wear and tear can develop, but it is possible to repair these blinds yourself with a few basic tools.

Step 1
Remove the blinds from the window and place them on a flat work surface.

Step 2
Slide off the bottom rail--the long metal piece--from the Graber blind.

Step 3
Cut the string with scissors and each cord should be double the length of the blinds plus the width. Feed the string through the hole of a sewing needle and push the needle through the opening in the cord lock and through each hole in the blinds. Tie a large knot in the end of the cord. Replace the bottom rail by sliding it back on. Shove the knot through the hole in the bottom rail and cut off the excess cords with scissors.

Step 4
Unjam the pin in the cord lock with a flat screwdriver to release the blinds if they are stuck and will not lift or lower. Push in the pin with the screwdriver to unlock it and it should release.

Step 5
Repair broken or damaged slats by repeating the above restringing steps. Only remove the slats before you reach the broken slats. Slide the new slats in between the ladder strings, and wind the string through the holes in the new slats. Tie a knot below the bottom rail and use the scissors to cut off any excess string. Replace the bottom rail.

Step 6
Hang the blinds back on the wall and make sure they operate correctly by lifting and lowering the cord.(Dianne Christensen-Herman)

The difference between off the shelf window blinds and quality custom ones. How it will make a difference in how they fit and how long they will last.

The list is almost endless: Mini Blinds, Value blinds, wood blinds, faux wood blinds, plantation blinds. Which should you choose? Here is some information that will help you to make a decision about which is the right blinds to purchase. Quality and style can vary, so made sure you understand what you need and want.

When people speak of "Express" blinds or "Value" blinds and "Cut Down" blinds are all basically the same thing: pre-constructed blinds that are partially finished and can be used after a Little intervention on hate part of the store. The come in 2" variation in size and the clerk will pull them out of the inventory and trim them down a little for your specifications. The same is done for hate length, depending upon the length of you window.

The quality may be very much the same as that used in premium window coverings, but since they are not custom ordered, but already manufactured in the factory (usually in China), they are much less expensive. You do not have any customization choices, for example as to where the tilt mechanism will be located or the way to raise or lower the blinds. In other words, you don't have a choice which is on the left or which is on the right. The color range may also be limited. There are discount stores that are able to sell the standard sizes of blinds. They are made to fit common window sizes. The materials used for these are not of the best quality and the fit is rarely perfect. You can get a Value blind for about the same cost, and it will fit perfectly and look great. No window is the same; there are always variations in width, Lent and other dimensions. It is impossible for shelf blinds to fit all windows, so they "sort of" fit most windows of that dimension. Both the length and the width of stock blinds have to accommodate a very wide variety of different windows. When you order stock blinds, you will probably end up with gaps at each side because the width is not perfect, and a big bulge of slats at the bottom because you have too much length.

The lowest cost blinds you can buy are shelf stock blinds. IN order for them to be so low cost, the quality must suffer, and you end up with light weight, cheap material, poor hardware and mechanisms, small choice in both size and color and of course, no warranty. Blinds such as these will not last more than three, maximum five years.

When you order custom blinds, everything is quality from the beginning. The window is properly measured, and the blind is manufactured to perfectly fit the opening. The error factor is only 1/4 inch on each side, and the length will be the correct length, with no bunching before the strong bottom rail. They are made with quality material and fixtures. The companies that supply such quality blinds are Bali, Prestige, Graber, Royal, Levelor, Hunter Douglas and Timber Blinds. They all have the widest range of colors to choose from, including wood hues. You can also choose faux wood in many wood looks, Tris Basswood or Asian wood and composite wood. If you've invested in quality window treatments like Bali blinds, you don't want to take the chance of damaging them by using the wrong dusting or spotting techniques. Like most reputable manufacturers, Bali offers a variety of cleaning recommendations, so regardless of the material you've chosen; wood, fabric or vinyl, your blinds can maintain the appearance they had when they were first hung. As a bonus, proper cleaning helps rid your home of allergens.

Instructions

* 1. Dust the blinds using a commercial grade feather duster to gently remove surface collections of grime and dirt. Be particularly kind to Bali aluminum blinds. They are treated to resist dirt and dust but if they are repeatedly bent, scratches on the blades could create hiding places for grime that will require more than a duster to clean out.

* 2. Vacuum the blinds when dusting doesn't remove all of the dirt. Use an upholstery attachment connected to a long hose. Gently sweep from side to side from the top down. Starting from the bottom could double your vacuum time because you'll be redistributing dust as you work. If you detect stains that can't be vacuumed away, dab the area with a damp cloth or use a mild cleaning agent to remove the grime.

* 3. Bathe the blinds. Bali-manufactured vertical blinds, are made to unsnap from their trolley frames and cleaned in a tub using a mild detergent and soft brush. Soak each blind for a short period of time before wiping each blade down.
* 4. Spot clean using a mild detergent, soft cloth and warm water using short strokes to avoid wrinkling or crushing delicate materials. Use a large, dry cloth or chamois to absorb moisture. If you hang blinds immediately without hand-drying the blades, you could leave new stains behind.

* 5. Clean extremely dirty blinds using alternate methods. Some window treatment pros recommend using a product like Windex® to tackle ultra-difficult challenges. If you decide to use this cleaning tip, test clean a spot at the top of the blind unit - near the ceiling - to see how well the product works.

* 6. Spruce up your Bali wood blinds. Use a clean, soft, damp cloth to remove soil from painted wood blinds. Blinds that have been stained and sealed are beautifully restored using commercial wood preservative products such as lemon oil.

* 7. Rehabilitate Sheer Enchantment® blinds by separating blade backings from the fabric, then wash fabric the fabric panels in mild laundry soap. Do not put the clean panels in the clothes dryer! Line dry, then steam or iron the panels on a low temperature setting, then snap fabric strips back onto their vinyl backings.

When looking for window blinds that are easy to install, many people choose Bali blinds because of their ease of installation. Bali mini blinds are great for DIYs (do-it-yourselfers) who want fashionable blinds that are a piece of cake to install. In fact, most people can install Bali blinds in less than 30 minutes. All it requires are some basic tools and the ability to follow simple installation instructions.

Here are some tools you will need for the installation:

1. The blinds you just purchased

2. Mini blind screws (these come in the box)

3. Hanging brackets (also in the box)

4. Bottom brackets; screws (in the box as well)

5. Drill

6. 1/16" drill bit

7. Screwdriver

Here is a brief low-down on how to install blinds manufactured by Bali:

Your first step is to hold up one of the mounting boxes to the upper edge of the window. You will want to use a pen or pencil to trace over where the holes are located. Do this for both upper edges of the window. These pencil marks are what you will then use as reference for drilling a hole in the wall for the bracket.

Drill small pilot holes that are not larger than the circumference of the screws so that your shades won't fall down! Screw in the mounting brackets along with the mounting screws into the holes you drilled. The open ends of the mounting box should be facing you. For larger windows, a middle hole/screw/bracket may be required.

Next, open your new Bali blinds from the box and be sure to remove any plastic or other packaging. Align the cellular blinds with the brackets and insert one side at a time into the mounting box. The mounting bracket covers need to be clicked into place at this point so that your new Bali blinds are snug and secure in your window. Do this on both sides of the window.

Find the plastic valance clips that came with your Bali shades to the top to cover the brackets for a more finished look. These valance clips are then used to hold the extra blinds that came with the package.

Lastly, find the small hook on either side and attach the enclosed wand that will enable you to open and close your blinds. The hole in the wand attaches to the side hook.

Bathrooms are turning into the new refuge, and some busy professionals feel it's one of their only chances to get some alone time during the day. Built-in TV's and radios, saunas, coffee makers and Jacuzzis are all being incorporated into bathrooms. For a more elaborate, layered look, appropriate for traditional, French, Mediterranean, and Country inspired décor, pair attractive top treatments, side panels or swags in colors that complement other accents in the room over your window blinds or shades.

It may seem like an insignificant part of you bathroom remodeling or redecorating plans, but the right window treatment can be the finishing touch for a beautiful bathroom. And, the wrong window treatment (i.e. one that can’t handle the environmental demands) will simply not last and from a design standpoint will detract from the overall beauty and cohesiveness of the design.

These days there are tons of window covering options, colors, textures and various upgrades, it can be a little daunting. Just ask what the warranty is for the signature brands and maybe also inquire about customer reviews. If you are comfortable with the guarantees and reviews, I say save the money. No one is going to be looking at the labels of your blinds.

Bali blinds are fine quality, high-end blinds constructed from different types of materials including aluminum, thin pieces of wood and taught fabric. These blinds are specifically designed for do-it-yourself installation, and can usually be hung easily by following a few instructions, depending on the type of windows you have.

Inside Mount

1. To install the Bali blinds so they hang inside the frame of your window, first make sure your window is at least 1-inch deep before mounting the hanging brackets. Once you have established this, screw the hanging brackets into the top part of the window frame, with the mounting hooks facing away from the window and into the room. You will need a drill or a screw driver and a bit of elbow grease to do this. Once these brackets have been properly installed in the top part of the window frame, mount your Bali Blinds by hooking each end into the part of the bracket that faces forward. Attach the valance clip and close the door on the brackets surrounding the tops of the blinds, creating natural tension on them.

Outside and Ceiling Mount

2. Blinds can also be installed outside of window frames or on the ceiling of the room. Hold the blinds up in front of the window and decide exactly where you want to install them. Mark each end of the blinds when you measure this. Screw in the mounting brackets where marked with a drill or a screw driver. The brackets on most Bali blinds are rather uniform and there are multiple holes in them for screws. For the ceiling and outside mounting of these blinds, it's recommended that both the outside and center screw holes are used to secure the brackets. Once these are properly secured on the wall or ceiling, insert the the blinds into the open bracket. Attach and lock the valance clip and close the door on the brackets to lock the blinds into place.

Typical, or perhaps most common, windows are sized about 42 inches wide or narrower. Heights vary a lot, but typical window height is up to 48 inches tall. When a window is over 65 or 75 inches wide, it is considered a large window. Blinds can be made to that size, and larger, but when they get that big, not only do they get more expensive, but big blinds also can be very heavy. Little can be done to cut the cost of the blinds for these large windows. However, if you can stand to treat the window only partially, then you can have blinds that are less expensive. Caf? blinds would only cover the lower part of the window. This may be desirable in a kitchen, when you only want to block the light with your blinds. Bathrooms also can be a good place for caf? blinds, when privacy is created by blinds that only cover the lower part of the window, and wonderful light is permitted above the blinds' headrails. Take care, however, when using blinds in wet areas. Real wood is prone to warping, so consider the less expensive, albeit heavier, faux wood blinds, which are resistant to most warping.

When windows get very large, blinds can be made differently in order to accommodate the weight. Often these oversized windows can accommodate multiple blinds. By putting two blinds side by side, you can cover the same space. However, if you use more than a single blind, there will be a larger light gap in the middle. Windows with a mullion in the middle can have this, but when the window is a continuous glass, a consumer will want a blind that covers more of the window. There is where two on one, or three on one blinds are helpful. These multiple blinds can have very small light gaps in between them. By sharing a headrail, they are faster to install, and they have individual controls.

Beware of any retailer who insists that you are able to have a blind at 96 inches wide by 96 inches tall- without separating it. The wood will have a performance problem for you in these large blinds. Split them into multiple window blinds. The cost a little more, but when you can lift the slats in these blinds, you will be happy.

Another way to handle these large windows is to use a continuous chain or cord system for your blinds. These systems use a geared control system, and the force required to raise your blinds will be much less than if you were to use a standard cord lift system. These systems have additional benefits, because they are safer, and they often are more attractive, by not having too many blinds cords hanging in the front of the windows. Many of these blinds systems are only a little more expensive than the regular, but your blinds will be the talk of the neighborhood.

When choosing blinds to cover large windows, consumers are faced with a range of product choices. An educated decision to use the right kinds of blinds will allow a consumer to manipulate the blinds in a safe and fun manner. Large blinds can be extremely heavy, and this excess weight can not only cause physical difficulty to the consumer, but they can make many consumers not even want to use their blinds, out of dread for the heavy weight.
